Ocotillo

Ocotillo
A bit to the southeast of the Cholla Garden in Joshua Tree National Park is the Ocotillo Patch, a large area of Ocotillo shrubs. Ocotillo, also known as coachwhip, candlewood, slimwood, desert coral, Jacob's staff, Jacob cactus, and vine cactus, is not a true cactus but a spiny shrub which reaches 10 meters (33 feet) in height and is which is mostly unbranched. These are the flowers.

Wow, is this a showy plant! The first inset is my favorite of the three, what a GORGEOUS branch brimming with blossoms! And yoiks, one must tread carefully around this one, those thorns are extremely unfriendly looking! I can't tell here but did you get any tight macros of the individual blossoms? I can see that to get a really good macro would take some know-how to do...long tubes are a challenge! Side views are a good choice though, and you can get a very nice picture of the mouth of the flower easy enough. Would be an excellent challenge I think! :)

RON!! *big hugs* Your War & Peace responses that you added to my Trinidad picture were such fun to read! :) I really appreciated the time you spent on me, your words are like a bag of potato chips! :D

First, I'm really sorry to hear about your health issues at the time you visited Trinidad...I hope you've totally recovered from any malady of the time. Next, it's a bummer the weather wasn't fabulous while you visited, we were counting our lucky stars for the gorgeous day! And I agree about rain. I used to view it as a day ruiner, but now I appreciate the droplets and wonderful atmosphere that stormy weather brings. :) (I agree with rainy redwoods, they are so nice!)

Re: Pumpkin, it's been fun sharing about her though we've been hesitant because we don't want to give people any bad ideas: birds are a lot of work and a particular mindset..not a spontaneous purchase. Our relationship with Pumpkin is so incredible that it would seem easy to have the same thing, but we had years of experience with birds. Anyway, It's wonderful that I can share about Pumpkin and everyone is having such a good time...it's fun for me too! :)

Also, it's wonderful to hear that you two are an equally suitable pair! We are looking forward to exploring the world together and with our cameras! Should be a lot of fun! I expect we'll be doing what I expect you guys do: RV! We plan to purchase something used in the next few months. :)

Finally, I hope your trip goes well! And thank you again for all of your commentary, it was wonderful!
