Cholla Cactus Garden

Cholla Cactus Garden
Traveling southeast on the Pinto Basin Road in Joshua Tree National Park we came to the Cholla Cactus Garden just as we came down out of Wilson Canyon. The garden is a huge area covered with Cholla cactus, mostly Jumping Cholla. They were starting to bloom when we were there and I'll post some photos of the blooms tomorrow.

A great desert scene. Are they really as spiky as they look?

These are probably worse, since sections of the plant very easily detach themselves and attach to shoes, shirts, arms, legs, etc. They are really nasty and the spines will penetrate leather.

Always fascinating to see the power with which nature even produces life in such inhospitable places on earth. Impressive shots, Ron!
