Valencia Island and the Skelligs

A view from this Island in County Kerry. I believe the first pointed Island is Puffin Island and the distant Island on the right to be Skellig Micheal

Star trails over Cyprus

13 Feb 2019 13 11 368
If you have never seen a patterned shot like this before one can be forgiven for asking "what am I seeing?" No, it is not a giant kaleidoscope nor big Ferris wheel but rather hundreds of bright stars in the black sky. As our planet revolves around its north south polar axis, then so looking from our planet, the stars move around the Stella NS axis too. As Cyprus is in the Northern Hemisphere, all the stars seem to revolve around our northern star: Polaris, which is aligned to our North Pole . Polaris is indeed in the centre of this circle. In practice, this shot is made up of 150 separate twenty second exposure photos of the stars, all on an unmoved tripod pointing to the star Polaris. The 150 photos are then layered on top of each other (stacked) resulting in actually seeing here the circular motion of our stars. The foreground is part of the very rocky and dried clay coastline. Enjoy full screen on black. Thanks to Steve Paxton for his invaluable help in me capturing and creating this.

The Edro III on the 'Sea Caves' rocks

28 Jan 2019 26 24 548
Paphos, Cyprus is the scene for this catastrophe. Situated in an area know as 'Sea Caves'. The Edro ran aground in 2011 carrying a cargo of plasterboard. Now a tourist attraction for the many visitors who walk this magnificent coast. More info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDRO_III

The White Rainbow! (Fog Bow)

27 Dec 2012 27 39 631
Dec 2012: We were astounded at this spot on the Göta Kanal here in Gothenburg when we saw this. If my wife had not seen it too, I might have thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. This is actually termed a 'fog-bow' too. - "In many cases when the droplets are very small, fog bows appear white, and are therefore sometimes called white rainbows" This has been posted as an accompaniment to the adjacent 'Fog Bow over Dovestones'- PiP

Fog Bow over Dovestones.

04 Dec 2018 48 61 650
A walk in these most strange misty conditions allows me to capture a glimpse of this Fog Bow at my local walking area. This is made up of Ice Crystals reflecting light. I have only seen this once before and that was in a very cold Sweden . In the foreground we can see that the reservoir is extremely low after many months of drought conditions revealing long submerged tree stumps. PiP More info here.

A Wintery Wonderland fence

23 Jan 2019 63 99 749
Just minutes from my house sits an old railway line. Long since converted into a liner park walk. Lined with fences and trees, now and again it is struck by beautiful low side lighting. Mix that up with one of the first hoarfrost of the season and green leaves on the evergreens and we end up with a painting of our Winter here in Oldham. I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb A must, for full screen viewing!

A Winter's tale

23 Jan 2019 25 29 516
Winter has finally arrived with some snow on my home town of Oldham's high ground. A scene towards 'Austerlands' from Waterhead, where frost snow and mist start to blend together as one. A mighty cold morning, but as always with these, rewarding if one can only pluck up the courage to go out and capture it. Perfect on full screen.

Storm lighting at Rossbeigh.

18 Sep 2018 41 44 704
The storms have gone - for the time being, but the moody lighting hangs about for some time yet. A lone walker chances the weather and it is another chance to get a much liked mood shot for me. Best enlarged. Pip

Lough Caragh

17 Sep 2018 14 25 348
Situated between Killarney and its South West coast sits this lake, which in blue skies and crisp air must be a real beauty. On this very wet September day though, a place for fishermen and mad photographers only. Moments after taking this, the heavens opened again and we could no longer see the lake at all. Best full screen on black.

Storm at Rossbeigh

17 Sep 2018 26 29 388
After a night of torrential rain, the day starts wet and very windy with gust up to 70mph. Anyway, not deterred, we took to the beach that we could see clearly form our lounge window. As you can see, with the wind blowing spume and sand everywhere - this was not for the feint hearted with an expensive camera kit in hand. Forgive the slight softness of the picture here, I had to wipe my lens a few times to rid salt water and sand :) About a mile of this walk before we gave up and retreated for coffee back in the warmth.

Evening falls at Rossbeigh

16 Sep 2018 32 35 541
At the end of a marvelous day doing the Ring-of-Kerry tour, we are greeted by scenes like this near our cottage at Rossbeigh. The left side demonstrates the contrast levels between the bright sunset reflections and the en-shadowed hills and foreshore.

Towards Seefin

16 Sep 2018 20 26 468
Seen from the N70 (Ring of Kerry road) looking South, past Killorgin and before Glenbeigh. A zoomed view of these high peaks as I skirt the sea shore to my North. Enjoy full screen

Rails, fences and steam in Devon

16 Aug 2006 36 76 673
Enjoy this oldie seen at the South Devon Railway station at Buckfastleigh taken some twelve years back. See here the GWR 5542, a Collet 4500 Class 2-6-2T (Tank Engine) that was built at Swindon in 1928 to a design by Churchward. If it looks rather unusual, that’s because another steam engine is just poking its nose out in front of this too. I think you will agree, a rather enjoyable shot of fences even without the engine. Enjoy full size on black. HFF, have a great weekend.

The mighty Matterhorn

17 Jan 1986 36 48 713
The Matterhorn (Monte Cervino) at 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) is certainly an impressive mountain, in fact one of the highest in the Alps and Europe. This Eastern face is taken from Switzerland near the iconic village of Zermat, some time back in 1986 whilst on a skiing holiday in Cervinia on its Italian side. A Fuji slide conversion, dormant after its projection many years ago and then conversion in 2012, until today. As always, better full screen.

A seat in the mist

04 Dec 2018 22 27 442
As the sun breaks through the mist here at the edge of Dove Stones reservoir, this new natural log seat is picked out by its strong colours. Much too cold and wet to sit here but it makes for another fine memory of this great moment. Enjoy large.

Torc Waterfall, Killarney National Park

16 Sep 2018 25 36 395
Just a few miles from Ladies View and the Lower Lake in the same Park is this splendid waterfall. At the base of the Torc mountain the Owengarriff River drains from the Devil's Punchbowl corrie lake on Mangerton Mountain. The highest fall, shown here, is a 20m drop, with the whole cascade being 110m. Enjoy full screen.

Killarney's Upper Lake

16 Sep 2018 20 39 487
A glimpse of this iconic Upper Lake, as passed on the Ring of Kerry road.

Mulgrave Barracks picturesque Ruins

16 Sep 2018 20 35 395
Seen just of the N71 near 'Ladies View' on the way to Killarney, Ireland. After not finding any reference to this on my research one of our fellow Ipernity viewers came up with the answer. With prominent towers, the Mulgrave Barracks appear to be an ancient castle, but it is really the remains of a nineteenth century Royal Irish Constabulary station from the nineteenth century. Makes for a very interesting subject though. See the comment by Keith, below. Looks good full size on black.
