Lochnagar at sunrise.

Lochnagar at sunrise.
Taken at 05:15 (not the indicated 06:15) from our cottage. The pyrimid is actually a memorial to Prince Albert from Queen Victoria within the private grounds of Balmoral.

Lochnagar (1155m) or Beinn Chìochan, located about five miles south of the River Dee near Balmoral, is one of the most celebrated of the Munros*; a pointed summit rising high above one of Scotland's most beautiful corries. It was featured in a poem by Lord Byron, ending with the following lines:
England thy beauties are tame and domestic
To one who has roved on the mountains afar
Oh! For the crags that are wild and magestic
The steep frowning glories of dark Lochnagar.

* Munro: defined as a mountain in Scotland with a height over 3,000 feet, and which is on the Scottish Mountaineering Club official list of 227 Munros.

As ever - best vied full screen. PiP = flight around the summit via my Flight Sim

Thanks so much George. I did not really know what time the sun would hit the top of here. I was waiting from just past 4am. Went back to bed after taking this!

It is indeed Daniela. Price Charles actually wrote a children's book about it called The Old Man of Lochnagar' whilst staying at Balmoral.

A wonderful image Herb. The early morning light, (of the kind only found in Scotland) is magical and it lights up the slopes of the mountain beautifully. Viewed large, the details in the shadow areas can easliy been seen with their lovely earthy colours.

Well worth getting up early for methinks!

As said in the previous image Kieth, the lighting on here was hypnotic to me. Unfortunately by the end of the week the snow had gone completely but was still beautiful. Special for Scotland lighting -maybe! Very happy that you enjoyed another of my Scottish images here.

Just seen your comment in 500px Toz. Yes just the same image but at a bigger 3000px wide. A super walking area and generaly approached from behind -but possible from the front via the Royal forested grounds. (I think access to the mountain was free). At the foot of the corrie lies a beautiful little Loch but we never got that high. This was always a sight for sore eyes my friend.

Thanks for the poem reminder Herb, it's lovely as is your beautiful picture. The PiP looks a bit scary, but I'm sure it passed the mountains safely! Two beautiful shots. Regards, Rosa.

Good to see you Rosa. You are the only person to mention the poem here. I managed to fly quite safely over the crag but it is always a little more difficult from outside the plane. I just wanted to show the little Lochen here. Glad you liked both of them just the same.

An absolute beauty in first light! The corrie shows up so well you can imagine the glacier which must have once filled it.
