A Dales lone-tree

Around Settle and Langcliffe in our Yorkshire Dales there are a few limestone outcrops. Here we see one dominated by this lone tree. In the distance sits one of Yorkshires three peaks: Pen-y-ghent.
The PiP shows a similar one not too far from here.
Enjoy

Another dry-stone wall for you here. Taken from a very nice spot above the village of Langcliffe near Settle. The late light gives this photo a special feel as it reflects from the lime-stone and clouds.

Have a good day.

A view of the Dales above Settle and Langcliffe showing the typical pictorial landscape around here. Of course these Herdwick sheep are as much a part of the scenery as the limestone outcrops with lone trees.
Enjoy large.
The flood plains of the River Ribble

For years now this lowland river area has flooded its banks after heavy rain but after this winter's rain here in Britain it has all gone to new high levels. Normally sheep and cattle graze these bottom fields. Thankfully there are no dwellings here. Over the last few years we have had droughts, fire and now floods. Already with us perhaps, is pestilence too. Things can only get better! - can't they?

Just above the picturesque village of Langcliffe and the town of Settle is this exquisite countryside. A grand place for walking with its many footpaths and byways through natural landscapes of hills, peaks, farmland and moors dotted with small babbling brooks and rocky gullies.

Just north of the Yorkshire Dales village of Settle lies another smaller village called Langcliffe. Travelling through this village, up a very steep incline, this position can be reached. The limestone outcrops here are always a feature of this area and provides lightness, even on a dull early Spring day as this. Notice too, the snow on one of Yorkshire's highest hills at 649m which is a third of the famous 'Three Peak' hills around here. The three Peaks which also include Whernside and Ingleborough is famous for its 'challenge' walk/run.

The weir at Settle

Just at the edge of town here, is the old weir of Bridge End Mill, in flood conditions! Normally one can see the top edge of the weir with about 5cm of water going over. Actually, and I wish I had photographed it now, at my back is a very interesting small constuction which I thought nothing of, at the time. It is the 'Settle Hydro' :
"Settle Hydro was built in 2009 on the site of Bridge End Mill, one of a number of mills that operated on this stretch of the River Ribble until the mid-twentieth century.
The Hydro is powered by water that is drawn from the Ribble immediately above the weir, through a sluice gate, along the mill's original head race, down the Archimedes Screw (the turbine!) and back into the Ribble a short distance from the base of the weir. Electricity is generated by the falling water rotating the Archimedes Screw turbine which, in turn, drives a generator. The electricity is fed by a direct line to the old mill building which now houses a number of apartments. Electricity that is not needed by the apartments is fed into the National Grid." Lone tree in limestone pavement country

One from our Yorkshire Dales here, not far from the village of Settle. Taken on our short break up here in 2020. I thought the monochrome brought out the stark countryside that abounds around here. These rocks are know as Limestone Pavement.
Essential full screen.

Attermire Scar

A grand walk through the Yorkshire Dales valleys here. We are walking the Attermire Scar trail which has taken us over the style from the bottom wall. Our walk continues along this wall (behind me) for about 500m before descending back down towards the village of Langcliffe. Along this walled section (see PiPs) we are overlooked by high crags in which the famous Victoria Cave lies hidden from view.
Enjoy
