They shall not grow old...

They shall not grow old...
Few people live in Mannahill: I doubt many ever did. Yet, one hundred years ago today, a decision made on the other side of the world led to six young men from this remote area becoming names on this small war memorial. Out here, far removed from the empires of Europe, I found the dissonance surprisingly moving.

With the centenary, we now shall be subjected to four years of puffing and posturing by politicians. I'd recommend instead taking in Eric Bogle's song in this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z_dUOhkygY

Definitely best viewed on black. Explored.

Sadly, I think you're right that "it would have happened anyway", Pam. Is it something in human nature?

Thank you very much, to all who commented here. Photographic sites aren't meant to be contentious and I've possibly strayed a little in that direction. Apologies to those who find that uncomfortable, but this remote memorial seen just before the centenary seemed to me to convey the utter disconnect between the real world of the people involved (both at the battle and at home, on whichever side), international 'power games' , and the self-serving sophistry of politicians.

Thank you so much for allowing your "person" to merge here with your image.
We do ourselves a disservice when we deny our feelings, I believe, though on another day there might not be a wish to add comments, but on the day that we do, it matters.
How else are we to grow except by sharing insights?
Whether I agree or disagree is not my point ... what I value is that you are willing to share.
