Carrara – Abbau von Marmor.
Carrara-Marmor (benannt nach der Stadt Carrara in der italienischen Provinz Massa-Carrara, Toskana) ist einer der bekanntesten Marmore weltweit.
Carrara-Marmor ist der Oberbegriff für mehr als 50 unterschiedliche Handelsnamen, die je nach Steinbruch, Tradition, Güte und Konvention, wie z. B. Carrara-Marmor C, Ordinario, Venato und Calacatta, benannt werden.
Entstanden ist der Marmor vor ca. 30 Mio. Jahren im Tertiär. Dabei wurden die Calcit-Ablagerungen aus abgestorbenen Meeresorganismen unter hohem Druck und sehr hohen Temperaturen zusammengepresst und wandelten sich dadurch zu Marmor.
