California – Calico Ghost Town (1988)

Die Stadt hat ihren Namen von den dahinterliegenden kalilkofarbenen Hügeln, in denen die vier Stadtgründer und Goldsucher ab 1881 ihr Glück und Reichtum suchten.
Bis 1885 wuchs die Stadt auf bis zu 1'200 Einwohner an und verfügte bald über drei Hotels, fünf Gemischtwarenläden, einen Fleischmarkt, Bars, Bordelle sowie drei Restaurants und Pensionen, mehrere Schulen und ein Postamt.
Die Popularität hatte die Stadt vor allem der Entdeckung von Borat zu verdanken. Nachdem die Vorkommen versiegten, wurde die Stadt um 1907 vollständig aufgegeben und verkam zu einer Ghost Town.

I remember we were driving on I-15 on the way to Death Valley and saw a big billboard there. We then spontaneously decided to make the short detour.

Karen, yes, but it's long time ago! And there was a fire there in the early 00s. I don't know what it looks like there. But it still exists, according to the ► Homepage. :-)
