Diane, trees also have a limited age, so one day this will happen. Or a lightning might strike once in a while...
Yes, that was a long time ago. I think it was around the time Clint Eastwood was mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, which is right next door.

Eva, thank you very much! Apparently it's a very touristic place. When we passed by then, we saw a car park and stopped because it is a nice place to stay for a while.

This is one of the more popular places to photograph on the California coast and you did a splendid job. Beautiful lighting! What a shame they needed to build a wall around the tree to protect it from tourists.
