Bales in Two Rock Valley

03 Jul 2012 349
Paper negative from my Kodak No. 1A Autographic Jr. Okay, I'm getting carried away with it but I'm having too much fun making these! The camera has rather shallow DOF even at F22-- the closest foreground is simply out of focus-- not motion blur. This scene had about 5 stops variation. The haze is real. Both my contact prints of this one have a funny out of focus blotch near the middle... not sure why. ( edit: Turned out to be just a smudge on the glass I was using. )

Llano

03 Jul 2012 2 345
Santa Rosa, California is in a wide flat plain, or llano , where the Laguna de Santa Rosa flows on its way to the Russian River. There are several places with scattered old Valley and Black Oaks. This oak has been enjoying the beautiful sunsets... 10 March - 1 July 2012 Ilford MGIV. You can also view a Solargraphy Map

Spring Hill Road

This is a contact print made from a paper negative. The photo was taken with a 90 year old Kodak No. 1A Autographic Jr. The light leaks were sorted out just by throwing a black tee shirt over the camera. The tee has printed on it: "What is the speed of dark?" -- isn't that just perfect? The contrast is starting to get under control by pre-flashing the paper and using a yellow filter. It was windy and there is some motion blur, but this contact print looks a bit softer than the negative. The barbed wire is sharp on the negative, and the contact print really looks better than this scan suggests. This was mostly a test of the exposure and I'm pretty happy that it's getting close at about ISO 3 with the yellow filter. What didn't go right is that the photographer forgot that the viewfinder on this camera reverses the image! The copse of trees was supposed to be on the left, so we missed Mt. St. Helena and the hills across the valley! But I've always liked those little rolls in the hills to the left of the trees too, so I'll pretend this is where I meant to point the camera!

Solargraphic Eclipse

20 May 2012 3 426
~6 Hour exposure 5x7 in. Ilford MGiv at Whiskeytown Lake in Northern California during the Annular Eclipse on 20 May 2012. The can's small diameter created a somewhat anamorphic projection. The eclipse is visible as a narrowing of the sun's trace with two darker patches. The lower patch and the gaps before sunset were due to clouds. I'm glad I took some solargraphy cans with me!

This is can "#1", the same can I used as a 1 week test. Ilford RC MGIV 5x7 paper. I think the barbed wire looks neat, which is good because a lot are going to have barbed wire in them! I probably should have angled the can up a bit more. Since this was a test, I didn't paint the can like I have all the ones that have been placed in more public locations. I was thinking of the paint as camouflage, but this can started rusting so that's another good reason to paint them if you use steel cans! Here is my Solargraphy Map
