St Thomas à Becket Church, Warblington, Hampshire.

St Thomas à Becket Church, Warblington, Hampshire.
St Thomas à Becket Church was founded in the Saxon era, and some Anglo-Saxon architecture survives. Otherwise the church is largely of 12th- and 13th-century appearance; minimal restoration work was undertaken in the 19th century. Its situation in a rural setting next to a farm made it a common site for body snatching in that era, and two huts built for grave-watchers survive at opposite corners of the churchyard (information from Wikipedia).

What a beautiful old church; well composed with the tombstones in the foreground.
Enjoy the rest of the week.

Thank you very much Andy.............and yes, I had no idea you have a background as a medieval historian. Attached are some more notes you might find interesting.

That's very kind of you, Keith - I enjoyed those links!
Yes, I'm one of the many in the old days who got a degree at the tax-payers expense and chose a subject I liked rather than anything remotely useful - and had a ball at college! (Thank you Mr and Mrs Taxpayer!).
And you won't be surprised to hear that South East European Medieval History doesn't have too many career openings attached to the subject! So I spent 35 years in Financial Services and 12 as a Business English teacher in Madrid, neither of which had any call on my knowledge of the Moravian Empire in the 9th century (more's the pity!).

Haha, join the club! I studied music and loved it until I realized that I didn't want to get old on a pittance and changed for a boring but much better paid office job;-)

I don't think I have ever seen a church with such a long, sloping roof like this one Keith. It's very interesting and I can just see some unusual windows along the side of it. A super shot with a lovely sky and interesting information about the grave watchers!!

Wishing you a good new week.

Thanks Rosa.............yes, it's quite an unusual looking church, with a fascinating history. I'm pleased you like the photo.

I have to go back next month.........they're selling tea/coffee and cakes in the churchyard!

I've just added some more notes in my reply to Andy above, if you're interested.

Have a good week yourself.

As others have already said, that is an unusual shape for a church, especially an English one, but having read the link you posted for Andy I do find it fascinating,
It's a superb capture and the angles of some gravestones is remarkable, our local cemetery put wire around them attached to a stake in the ground, so they cannot fall further, Health and Safety apparently,
Anyway a fabulous and very interesting image Keith, Great work!

Thanks Roger..............I'm glad you like the photo and the information I provided. The graves around the immediate area of the church are very old, but in surprisingly good condition. Newer graveyards have been established outside the boundary wall on land near the church.

Body snatching? Really macabre.
But the shot of this old, yet charming village church and the small cemetery is great!

Thank you for your kind comment * ઇઉ * I'm glad you like the church and my photo.

Body snatching was very common at one time...........trainee doctors needed bodies to practice on..!!

Thanks for the clarification, Keith.
I had thought of something like that,
but also of people who might want to imitate Dr. Frankenstein. ;)
