Apparently in the 19th century the city burghers decided they didn't want Newcastle to become a drab industrial city, so they all built developments in the centre that featured architecture of a very high standard. And then there are the bridges.
Now, however, I think tourists mainly go there for the big shopping mall (hmm -- same thing in Toronto).
I think people mainly come to where I live because a snowstorm has closed the highway.
