A lovely capture and nice looking ponies but food is I suspect the only reason they loiter in the car park area.

Thank you very much Roger. Food mainly I think but it was hot and they seemed to be enjoying the shade of the trees. I did back off a bit when one of the bigger horses appeared to be heading straight for me!

Hi Rosa. Yes they are the right colour for unicorns!! There was a beautiful chestnut with a white blaze that had quite a lot to say for himself! He made a beeline for us at one stage and I didnn't hang around for him to get too close. A good job he didn't have a unicorn horn!!!

dead womans ditch.....
I used Google to translate this to German, translated back to English, again to German and a second time to English and ended up with "dig up the dead woman" ;-))))
anyway, a beautiful picture.

How did it come by the name. - you are not far wrong!

The story was that a local man named John Walford killed his wife of three weeks, Jane Walford, nee Shorney, and left her in this ditch covered by leaves and branches . . He was arrested and was hanged on Aug 30th 1789, his caged body left on a gibbet on Danesborough Hill near to where his wife was found where it remained until the cage disintegrated a year later.

It is said he loved and planned to marry Ann Rice from Nether Stowey but met Jane and when she became pregnant he was forced to marry her or provide upkeep for the child so they eventually married. By this time they she was expecting her second child. It was said Jane taunted him constantly about Ann and he snapped, beating her over the head and slitting her throat, leaving her body in Dead Woman's Ditch. A knife and bloody clothing were found at his cottage and he was arrested and sentenced to death. When they put him on the cart to take him to be hanged Ann went to him. She was also pregnant with his child but was not allowed to kiss him goodbye.

This is the story of how Dead Woman's Ditch got it's name, although it is said that an earlier map of 1782 aready shows the name in use so there is some uncertainty.

Despite these events it seems he was always well thought of and was depicted as a pleasant young man!

I hope Google manages to translate this oroperly but in any case it is 'Dead Woman's Ditch' because a dead woman was left there!!

Surprising that these animals stay wild and unused to regular human contact !

Thank you very much Pat. They are supposed to be free and to a great extent wild but sadly have become used to sweet treats from visitors who don't realise they are wild and can be aggressive if the sweets are not forthcoming. Sugar can be quite addictive!!!

I heard of a young girl who had befriended a young fox and was actually petting it. Once told how wrong that was she didn't know what to do!

Wonderful scene here Carol. Wild horses seem to be more common in your part of the country. We have plenty of horses around here but non of the wild variety that I have heard of.

Thank you very much Doug. They have them on Exmoor and Dartmoor too. Technically I guess the ones here are free to roam rather than wild as they have owners but are only rounded up for occasional health checks - the best of both worlds I would say and wild enough that I wouldn't risk getting too close! They are beautiful animals though.

They have some wild ponies near to me, and lots of notices explaing why it is bad to feed them.
