Ex-Hawkser, 1919 purchased by Sheaf Steam Shipping from Turnbull & Son, Whitby renamed Sheaf Mead, 1930 sold to E. Tricoglu, Andros renamed Mina E. Tricoglu, 9.10.1933 stranded at Civitavecchia and 1934 scrapped. Herbert Brown Rae's longest association was with the SHEAF MEAD (1921-1930), which was engaged in 'deep sea tramping' along the Pacific coast of North and South America with forays to Australia and the Far East.

From the Beginning

|
The family of Herbert Brown Rae travelled with him from early on. A story from the Vancouver Sun (1924) has him, his wife Flo and daughter Dulcie with him on the first British ship to travel through the Kiel Ship Canal after the armistice. This picture must be taken very close to that event and the ship is probably the 'Sheaf Lance'.

A front page article in the Sun on the Rae family who had been travelling around the Pacific in 1924. The ship was currently loading logs for shipment to Japan.

Circa 1920 somewhere in a tropical area of the world. Then how to explain the 'GB' licence plate? I suspect this is the official car of a British consular agent with whom ship captains were constantly in touch. Herbert, Flo and Dulcie Rae in the back seat.
An Extraordinary Photo!
Rae Home Farm, ca. 1932

There is a lot of information in these pictures. This is the 'Mckercher' place that Albert acquired around 1926 and formed the main base for the children while they were in school. It only passed out of Rae hands in 1962. It shows the quite substantial barn that tragically burned down in 1933 following a lightning strike. The replacement building was destroyed by a tornado several years later. In the lower right corner is a grouping of the family and a whole series of photos were taken on this day. Albert Jnr is both holding and riding the white horse.
