Here's where things went stupid. On the map, the trail goes along the relatively flat length of the first bench, then does a hairpin turn back up the rusty rock. Looking straight up at the saddle, you can see many scree trails where hikers had just opted to push straight up rather than the longer switch. So I did the same thing.
