According to a nearby information board, this Beech [Fagus sylvatica] was probably planted about 200 years ago, but due to the shape was never harvested.
One of several large & old trees in this area, this is probably the largest specimen.
Beech trees are naturalised rather than native to this area, but are important for wildlife, especially when they grow to this size.
The bench is one of several memorials, including under individual trees, to supporters of the Woodland Trust. HBM !
