mrw - Railway !

Trying to be in too much of a hurry, attempting to catch the passing Tyne Valley service, so this snap has ended up rather blurred - although it was moving faster than I expected. I kept well clear of the wire fence ...
[I suspect this is the Northern service, 14:54 ex Carlisle]
mrw - Yew [no.3]

Yews are quick slow-growing trees, so this will be a lot older than the relative thinness of the trunk might indicate.

mrw - Yew [trunk]

A somewhat older Yew [Taxus baccata] near to the railway line, note the reddish and fissured bark on the main trunk.
mrw - sky and bare trees

The breeze is moving the thin clouds around, exposing some blue sky - so there has been some sunshine.

From this angle, the pond looks to be quite a decent area, and with several islands and inlets.
mrw - reflection

The birch and alder on the island are reflected in the still waters of the pond.

Leaning on the short safety fence and looking into the shallows, [too early for frogspawn !] while Ben investigates ...
This could be a good place for a summer picnic - hopefully, it seems that the sort of people who come here are not prone to dropping litter.
mrw - pond's information
28 Feb 2022 |
|
To summarise, the pond was dug in the 1990s and it has become naturalised into the landscape. Wildlife quickly adopted the pond and the islands.

Yew tree [Taxus baccata]
Although a decent size, this Yew is a youngster compared to some other specimens in the UK.

Pulled this branch into a better position for a photograph to check the identity.
It is from a Yew, Taxus baccata.
mrw - fallen tree

Fallen tree, with the root-plate exposed, so maybe storm damage ? blown down by the wind, perhaps a decade or more ago ?

Information board explaining the significance of ancient trees in the landscape, especially their contribution in supporting wildlife.
mrw - ancient Beech [1 of 2]
28 Feb 2022 |
|
|
|
According to a nearby information board, this Beech [Fagus sylvatica] was probably planted about 200 years ago, but due to the shape was never harvested.
One of several large & old trees in this area, this is probably the largest specimen.
Beech trees are naturalised rather than native to this area, but are important for wildlife, especially when they grow to this size.
The bench is one of several memorials, including under individual trees, to supporters of the Woodland Trust. HBM !

mrw - stick wigwam

Tree surrounded by a wigwam of mostly upright sticks, just off to the side from the main path.
Why ? is the question that springs to mind.
