15 Augustus

Today, 15 August 2020, it was exactly 75 years ago that the Second World War ended. Japan announced its capitulation. These days the end of WW2 is commemorated on a limited scale in The Netherlands, hence the flag..
For The Netherlands in 1945 it meant that also the Netherlands Indies were liberated and the idea was that it would become Netherlands Indies again. Liberated it was, but not again Dutch. Two days after the Japanese capitulation the republic Indonesia was proclaimed by Soekarno. After an expensive (colonial) war in which The Netherlands tried to reconquer sovereignty, this was handed over to Indonesia in december 1949. On both sides there were many casualties.
