Chesterfield
The Parish Church of St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield, is AKA "The Church of the Crooked Spire".

The spire is both twisted and leaning, twisting 45 degrees and leaning 9 feet 6 inches from its true centre. The deformation is due possibly to the scarcity of skilled craftsmen (the Black Death had been gone only twelve years prior to the spire's completion), insufficient cross-bracing, and the use of unseasoned timber.

I was born here, so I've always sat up abruptly when a photo of the famous curch appears (which it does quite often). There's a similar twisted spire in Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire. And also one in France ( I forget exactly where but it was shown here on ipernity quite recently).
A fine shot, Howard!

Thanks for the information. It so happens that I'll be stopping in Cleobury Mortimer tomorrow en route to Ludlow (this very evening I created a "route" in OS Maps of a circular walk starting from near the church) and I'll look out for the spire.

Roy (who is now recovering from his ginger snap) says it would look better if you filled in the hole in the foliage.

Undoubtedly. I'll turn the clock back to 1981 and do that very thing.
