Another 'thingy'!

Another 'thingy'!
A hydraulic turbine of some kind, I presume. In the Jardín Nuevos Ministerios, Madrid.
José Gafarot has helpfully provided the answer below.

I think you are correct Andy, given the diameter of the shaft there was a considerable force involved, isn't there a plan somewhere saying what all these things are ?

I'm sure there is but I'm not now, nor ever was, an engineer, Peter!
Cheers and stay safe !
More info:
Actually there are some rusted-up plaques with info but they need to be replaced as they are no longe legible. I managed to guess the TU of turbine and now that José Gafarot has advised me (below) that it is a Pelton high-pressure turbine, I can recall seeing the PEL of Pelton!

Of course I remember them! I used to teach daily not far from there. I posted a shot of that one and I think also one in Plaza de Felipe II, but on Panoramio, not ipernity.. And I no longer have access to these shots as well as the majority of my Cornwall shots (it's a long story!).

There seems to be a few of these engines lying around Madrid - was there an exhibition or something at one time?

These pieces of old machinery (I have shown some others in recent pages) are all in the same park which is outside the Ministery of Transport and Public Works, or some such, Jenny

It is a Pelton turbine.
High pressure, low flow.

These mechanical oddments would certainly add a degree of novelty to the park, I can imagine that kids must enjoy poking around them.

For me as mechanical engineer it was easy to identify this as an impeller of a water turbine, Jóse has given above an more precise designation - I'm to long out of that business :-)

I'm enjoying your images of these various "thingys" Andy. I think it's such a great idea to preserve them and put them on display as public artwork and great photographic subjects!

I agree, Keith! Hats off to the functionary who thought up the notion!

Hi Andy

A very nice picture, of this Pelton wheel.
As Jose says, used where there is a big head of water, as opposed to the traditional waterwheel which relies on a lot of water with only a few metres head..

Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!
