Carn Brae granite

On the left, possibly a menhir (standing stone) once, and certainly used as a gatepost more recently.

Andy Rodker club has replied to Jenny McIntyre clubCarn Brae is an inland hill and there is an ancient settlement site on it. It was fortified at one point and this stone was part of a gate in the fortifications. Whether it was previously a menhir, I have no idea but at least one local history writer thought it possible.
Anyway, there are many ancient cliff top settlements and with gates, many of which were heavily fortified against attack.
