Hard to imagine this wooded, we are so used to the way the landscape looks now! I recently read that GB has only 10% wood cover as opposed to Spain or Germany with over 30%.

Your English is so good, Gudrun that I forget that you aren't English and in fact hail from somewhere beyond Ipernistan! (where wood cover is of course a healthy 40%!)

Haha, beyond Ipernistan from the area where the Swabian housewife rules;-) In my part of Germany there are over 38% wood cover, but then we have the Black Forest...

To tell you the truth, the only clue that you come from a Central / Northern European and Germanic language speaking country was your name; I really didn't know where you were from. Thanks for putting me out of my ignorance!
Swabia; brings back to mind my medieval history studies at university - the land of the Hohenstaufen clan, etc.

Hohenstaufen is a place where we sometimes went when I was a kid! My great grandmother lived in Lorch, the monastery there was founded by the Staufer. Lots of history in Swabia as in most other places in Europe:-)

Like many susceptible Northern Europeans from the late 18th century on, I was (in my teens) fascinated with the story of the Hohenstaufen dynasty of Holy Roman Emperors and the connection with The Deep Deep South! I particularly took the sides of Conrad, Manfred, and Conradin in their battles with their rapacious enemies coveting the wealthy Kingdom of Sicily!

I suspect I know less about this bit of history than you! At school the Middle Ages were somewhat neglected, instead we spent a lot of time on the French Revolution. I only remember Friedrich Barbarossa because we had to learn the poem by Uhland;-)

I don't know the Uhland poem, Gudrun but the romantic aura of the Hohenstaufens lingered on, very probably without real foundation, for centuries.
At the end of the day, after all is said and done, they were simply dynasts with the ethos of 'family first'. I guess they they were the template for the Hapsburgs!

Most got taken for building projects. Many 18th and 19th century town expansions are paved with granite from places such as this!

Food for thought - wood and rock depletion. At least we can plant more trees but such a small island and so many people! Great photo.
