Andy Rodker club has replied to Amelia clubSorry, but this is a longish story.
It begins in my garden in Harrow-on-the Hill in the 80s. I bought the flat there partly because of its fabulous garden. I knew precious little about gardening at that time and had never really taken much of an interest in my Mum's various gardens, except that I knew that I liked them of course!
Anyway, apart from vines, apricots that looked like nectarines, tayberries, loganberries, figs (3-4 varieties) etc, there was also a terrific climbing rose with the most incredibly coloured flower and with darker green leaves than usual.
Well, I decided the garden needed maintaining so I went on a crash course in gardening via books from the library and frequent phone calls to my Mum.
I suddenly discovered a passion for gardening - it was obviously in the genes anyway!
I visited my mum one day and took her some of the roses. She had never seen them before and immediately painted them (she is a good artist too). I still have that quickly done 'off the cuff' painting and it is how I later knew the name of the rose! It is in Cornwall otherwise I would photo it and post it here! My Mum was impressed with the dark green leaves. She always understood them to mean that the variety was a very old one.
Anyway, I had to move from that flat too suddenly for my liking and so was unable to take a cutting. I also wasn't into photography at that time.
I forgot all about it until in 2010, when living in Cornwall, I saw the same rose in a garden in Portreath. I was then encouraged to do some online research but still couldn't put a name to the rose, I also tried to obtain a cutting but there was never a reply when I rang the doorbell.
Again I forgot about it until I moved to Madrid and there, in the Retiro Park rose garden, I saw it again, and with a name tag! And this is what you see here!
So that is how I know the name, Amelia!
:o)
Best wishes, Andy
