Well, there are tin mines like this dotted all around the coasts of Cornwall and the ones that have survived, of course, have been those that are the most inaccessible!
Not only did they start at the tops of the cliffs but they also extended far out below the sea!

For about 100 years until the 1860s, Cornwall was the undisputed World centre of tin mining. Then cheaper areas of production in the Far East and elsewhere opened up and that, as they say, was that!. Cornwall then had many unemployed miners and they emigrated en masse to Australia, South Africa, The USA, and elsewhere ... anywhere where there were minerals to be had and mines to be dug!

Yes! I used to climb at Baggy Point and we stayed at the camp site at Croyde Bay. The pub was obligingly adjacent!
