Alaticaulia don-quijote

Also known as Masdevallia don-quijote, this species is a real charmer, both for its name and for its unusual form. It is native to Ecuador and is named after the Man of La Mancha, Don Quixote, for its supposed resemblance to the bowed legs of his horse, Rosinante, (the lateral sepals - lower half of the flower) and a lance (dorsal sepal - upper half of the flower). The plant is large, as Masdevallias go, about 15 cm tall, with 35 cm flower spikes that bloom successively, and flowers that are about 11 cm tall. It is a very vigorous grower and bloomer.
