Also known as Masdevallia dynastes this odd species is from Ecuador and is another high-altitude, cool temperature orchid. These flowers are around 2 centimeters in size and the plant quite small also.

Masdevallia lamprotyria

Masdevallia lamprotyria is another orchid species from Ecuador and Peru. It is highly scented and when it blooms in the spring its scent is almost overpowering. Its name refers to to its purplish-pink color. It prefers cool temperatures and high humidity.

Masdevallia hirtzii

Masdevallia hirtzii is a small orchid species from Ecuador and Peru that grows in montane (mountain) forests at high altitudes (not all orchids are from warm and tropical areas). It is named after a well-known Ecuadorian orchid collector, Alexander Hirtz. I am going to be posting more orchid pictures this week, photos of orchids I grow and will be catching up my 100x:2014 project.

Masdevallia veitchiana

This too is not my plant but was photographed at our recent show. I've grown the species but it is a little large for my limited area, though very beautiful, in fact, the flower I use for my avatar is this species, grown, flowered and photographed by myself. It is from the Andes in Peru. It is also #26 in my 100x: 2014 project, so I am a quarter of the way finished with that.

Masdevallia sotoana

Masdevallia sotoana is a tiny orchid species from Ecuador. The plant is only 4cm tall and the tubular part of the flowers only 1cm long. The flower is lined with glandular hairs but I do not know what the function of the hairs is. There are more photos of these unusual flowers at the blog post below. This is number 9 in my 100x: 2014 project.
