Bloedel Conservatory

Bloedel Conservatory
Several weeks ago my wife and I spent a day up in Vancouver, BC, and a good part of the day, which was wet and cold, at the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park. The conservatory not only has a nice collection of plants, but also quite a number of tropical birds that have the run of the place, and, at the the time we were there, local artists were also exhibiting some of their work among the plants and birds. We enjoyed our visit and took a lot of pictures, some of which I'll be posting in the coming week.

Wow, wow, wow! What a gorgeous bird. I love the position and how it's peeping out from behind the tree. I expect you know that this is a male Eclectus, though I can't say which subspecies it might be. Apparently it's really hard to tell and as the birds sometimes interbreed, the problem of id is even harder. These are on my shortlist of favorite parrots, specifically the males, who have a much sweeter and gentler personality than the often feisty and difficult to handle females. (What can they say, they're redheads!) That color is just so amazing too, combined with the candy-corn beaky! LOVE THEM!! Did you know that until they knew better, the green males and red females were thought to be different species? Eventually they got a clue...breeding season perhaps? ROFLMAO. They are, from what I can think, the most colorful, sexually dimorphic birds out there. Can you think of any other birds where both the males and females are so colorful?

I went through your exotic birdy album and had a wonderful time looking at every image. This boy gets first prize though, I can't stop staring at this lovely bird! :)

Thanks for the compliment on my "Leviathan" tadpole picture...I'm so happy you got to see that one, it's a total favorite of mine and definately one I'd want to show you because I love how it turned out! Being able to see how transparent their skin is was so cool.

TY for filling me in on the UK law about allowing people to walk through their property...heh, there are way too many people in the US who would call for target practice if folks started trying that on their property. Maybe I'm wrong about that though, but I wouldn't ever want to try it! :D
