Rhyolite Sculpture

Rather appropriate, I thought, with Halloween coming, this statue is one of many in the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada. Nearly abandoned for many years it now boasts a number of rather strange sculptures which have become a tourist attraction. Among the sculptures are a number of these "ghosts" created by the Polish sculptor, Albert Szukalski,

This sculpture stands in the middle of a busy intersection, downtown San Antonio, Texas. It was a gift of the government of Mexico. It is 65 feet (20 m) tall and weighs 45 tons (40800 kg). It is the work of the sculptor Sebastian. The tower in the background is the Tower of the Americas, an observation-restaurant tower. The other two photos are of other lighted buildings along the riverwalk.

A little wind, a lot of snow and some sunlight, none of which were provided by me. I just had the camera.

One of the places we stopped on our way to Spokane, was at Beebe Springs Natural Area along the Columbia River. This an area where native tribes once dug Camas bulbs (shown below). There are sculptures there by the native artist, Smoker Marchand, this of an Indian on horseback and others of women digging Camas bulbs.

By David Govedare and erected in 1984, "this corten steel sculpture depicts runners of all kinds. It celebrates the Spokane tradition of Bloomsday, the largest timed road running race in the world" (quoted from the Riverfront Park website).

This picture is dedicated to my good friend from Sri Lanka, JM Uvais. It is nowhere near as good as his work, but a small token, nevertheless, as a tribute to him and his photographic skill. You can see his photostream here: www.flickr.com/photos/jmustudio/ . It has been mostly rain here for the past month with little opportunity to get out and take pictures, so I finally set up indoors and did some macro work on various household and art objects. This was taken with my 90mm macro lens and a star filter hand-held over the end of the lens (the filter fits my 17-85mm lens but not my macro). The other two pictures were taken without the star filter. The item is a limited edition piece by Swarovski.
