I, too, liked having wind wings in cars (we called them side vents). In Florida they were particularly good for keeping the car cool without having the noise of open windows. I did a quick search on 'wind wings' and immediately found the article linked below that addresses why they disappeared. Basically it was the increase in cars with AC (now almost all) but also styling and aerodynamics. I also remember that as cars aged, they tended to not fit well and caused lots of wind noise.

Thanks for the link! The AC thing makes perfect sense. I didn't get a car with AC until 2001. I do remember my dad's old pickup, then later my horrible '60 Ford Anglia, had whistling wings, so you had to open them a tiny bit more.

Uh oh, another similarity -- I had an English Ford. Mine though was something like late 50's. There's a difficult family story behind it, which I don't want to give, but that's a way to say it was a very awkward car both to drive and own.

The little windows were called "quarter vents" here, though I do recall seeing an advert for at least one 1950s car where they were called "air conditioning". :-) I think the main reason they were removed was cost cutting.

Gee, so many different names for them. I wonder what the official car manufacturer's term was. It seems that in the modern era, most changes were/are made for the sake of either saving money or charging more money. ;-o Thank you, tiabunna!
