Basket on wood

The basket (pictured in whole somewhere) was bought by my father in the early 1970s, but I am not sure where. I remember he said it would be lined with banana leaves, a fish placed inside, and steamed. I have a vague memory of him bringing it home from New Zealand (Maori?). Or, was it Malawi?
