My grandmother too was good at sewing and darning and mending and I have to try these things from time to time (not darning, though!). I don't think of her at such times - all I can think about is threading the the cotton through the effing eye of the effing needle. If I am lucky, 10 minutes. If not, one hour. Failing eyesight with age is the bugbear here, I used to be able to do it in less than a minute every time.
