The route to Parys Mountain

12 Aug 2021 32 52 290
As we climb this steep path up to the old Windmill, we trample down under-foot the old copper mine workings debris. Around us is a scene straight from Tolkien’s Mount Doom area. Have a great weekend. Herb

Aug 19, 2021 -A sign of our times!

19 Aug 2021 30 44 325
World Photography Day Even though, by enlarge Covid restrictions are fully released here in Britain, lots of our population are still wary and try to protect themselves in our town centres. This taken in my own town centre of Oldham today. It also shows the enduring love and affection we have for our own species in these days of tragic events around the world caused by pandemic, climate and conflicts. www.ipernity.com/group/worldphotographyday

Point Lynas view

09 Aug 2021 16 16 178
Another look at both the lighthouse and the old Point Lynas boat jetty pier. This is where the old Pilot boats would call and pick-up/drop-off the pilots to guide shipping around this dangerous coast, to and from the port of Liverpool. The lighthouse standing like a small fort here with those castellation’s and even a cross in the wall. See PiP. Enjoy full screen.

Point Lynas Lighthouse

09 Aug 2021 28 35 272
Sitting on a point of land about three miles east of Almwch on the Isle of Anglesey. A pilot station was established on the point in 1766 to guide ships entering and leaving Liverpool, with an associated lighthouse added in 1836. It is still in use with its reflector seen here behind the circular windows. We picnicked just near this spot where looking up you also see the small coastguard hut. The PiPs shows the view from here back to the mainland and the Snowdonia mountain range, and I also show a snap of the playful dolphin from this very same spot, captured whilst we ate. Enjoy full screen.

Summer colours at the sea.

09 Aug 2021 28 24 300
What can be nicer than to walk a coastal path with borders like this. Enjoy these wild flowers showing mainly orange crocosmia in the foreground. This taken on Point Lynas here on the Island of Anglesey. We also see the old jetty that allowed pilot boats to come alongside. The pilots guided shipping in and out of Liverpool, still some distance to the east from here. Enjoy full screen.

A Post card from Point Lynas

09 Aug 2021 29 47 277
A view towards Point Lynas Lighthouse here on the Island of Anglesey, North Wales. This is a splendid coastal walk with the highlight being the lighthouse area itself where we saw dolphins (or porpoises) playing in the waters. Enjoy full screen and have a good week.

Carnforth Railway Station

08 Aug 2021 22 12 256
The market town of Carnforth in Lancashire is the setting of these photos aimed mainly at its old railway station. Sitting on the ‘West Coast’ railway line, it has always been busy, especially with its close proximity to the Lancaster canal and A6/M6 roads. The town was well known for being a ‘railway town in the 19th century as being at the junction of three major railways. The station was made famous by it being the setting for the 1945 ‘Brief Encounter’ film, refreshment room set (top centre). Alongside this station on the old wagon works and sidings used to be a very big train museum called ‘Steamtown’ that ran from 1967, sadly closed to the public in 1987 but is now run as the ‘West Coast Railway Company’ which operate heritage steam and diesel trains across the UK railway network. Unfortunately there is no public entrance allowed for me to explore there. The collage photos are self explanatory but the yellow train coming in, is an Avanti West Coast, Pendolino class 390 from Glasgow to London. Enjoy full screen.

Footbridge over the River Keer

05 Jul 2021 26 31 248
We are approaching the end of our round walk here on the River Keer from and to Carnforth. A rather nice and quite old wooden footbridge that would lead us back onto the seaward side of the river but that was not for us today. See PiP for top view. Best full screen

Glasson Dock and its Lighthouse

09 Jul 2021 40 58 287
Established in 1836 and now disused, we see here the small very unusual lighthouse on this secluded Victoria Terrace. On the left side we see the big black lock gate that takes shipping from the Lancaster Canal, behind me, into a deep lock and then through another lock-gate into the estuary across from Sunderland Point into the Irish Sea. Have a great weekend. Herb

A walk over Bolton-le-Sands

05 Jul 2021 24 14 212
After leaving the railway town of Carnforth we walk along the canal and end up at 'Bay View' before we walk over the slightly dangerous tidal marshlands of Morcambe Bay to the River Keer estuary. Lots of sheep paths on here trying to divert us of the main footpaths but we stick to the edges and reach our goal of the river itself. The sheep know all the safe paths here and we keep an eye on them so we are in no real danger, especially as high tide is still many hours away. Across the water we are looking towards Grange-over-Sands with the English Lake district in the far background. Enjoy this and the PiP at full screen.

Birds on the wing

05 Jul 2021 30 24 250
This is the Keer Channel on Morcambe Bay, just south of Carnforth. I heard this flight of birds before I saw them. As to what they are, they were moving so fast that even my fast shutter speed fails to make them out that good. My research makes me think they might be Golden plover (Pluvialis apricaria) that are known to visit this area. Maybe somebody may know better. Enjoy full screen.

A view to the Yorkshire Dales

05 Jul 2021 21 17 238
This 180°, eight photo stitch panorama looking NE taken from just north of Carnfoth, shows the hills and fells of our Yorkshire Dales. We are seeing much here including the Howgills, Barbon Fell and Ingleborough centre stage. A little to the left is the borders of our Lake District and the pleasant tourist village of Kirby Lonsdale hiding beyond the foreground hills. Enjoy full size.

Memories

06 Jul 2021 30 58 266
As nature takes over the seat here in Barbon, Cumbria perhaps we see things as they should be. After all it’s not in nature’s interest to place benches all over the place. However, a once cooling place of rest and meditation for someone special, it’s now a pity to see it like this. Perhaps it looks quite different in winter? Enjoy full screen and have a good week.

The beauty of our Earth’s troposphere.

01 Oct 2020 30 32 331
Enjoy with me this beautiful sun-setting sky and clouds. Taken last year whilst on the Yorkshire coast near Runswick Bay. Who could imagine a better sky scene than this? NB. ‘troposphere’ definition: the lowest region of the atmosphere, extending from the earth's surface to the tropopause, an inclusive height of about 6–10 km (to the lower boundary of the stratosphere). Enjoy full screen.

Round-up time

29 Sep 2020 23 19 202
Its sheep round up time as the sun starts to set here, but whether these are simply going to the next field or to market I cannot say. Just out of vision is a sheep dog and a farmer sat on a quad-bike. Enjoy full screen.

‘E’- marks the spot

07 May 2021 45 63 358
A double rainbow shows us where the treasures are hidden, just near the fence post with the letter ‘E’. This was taken as part of a series, in pouring rain, a few hundred metres from our holiday cottage in Aberfoyle, Scotland. The clump of woods on the right side also highlights the tree of which my earlier sprint with the rainbow arch was taken too. (PiP) HFF, have a great weekend.

Deluge of Daffodils

07 May 2021 20 23 215
A heavy downpour, even as the sun still shines puts a rather artistic backdrop on these spring flowers here in Scotland. The tone of the tree trunks and woods behind completes this natural capture. Of course I was safety sheltering behind a big glass window. Enjoy full size.

A Yorkshire Sunset

29 Sep 2020 16 18 231
Taken on our holiday on the Yorkshire coast last year, we see here a splendid sunset over a gentle hill. As I take this, I still hear sheep baaing not far away. The power cable I could not do much about but the geometry adds a little rather than distract. Enjoy full screen.
