A panoramic (3 x photos) view of Pendle Hill from just beyond the Nick of Pendle . You can see our path snaking up on the left here. See adjacent photo for full description.

The rendezvous

A capture from a few years ago whilst staying overnight at Southampton. This overlooking Southampton Water from the Weston Shore Promenade (I think!) Enjoy the weekend

Nature at its best

13 Feb 2023 18 23 184
A visit to Sabden village in Lancashire took us on to Churn Clough Reservoir. On climbing the hill to the reservoir we were blessed by this sight. Enjoy full screen

The Dunes of Maspalomas

28 Nov 2011 38 35 260
A day trip on the Island of Grand Canaria in 2011 brought us to the edge of these dunes. We are quite near the sea here but my photo conveys more a sense of the Safari Desert perhaps. There are signs of tourist having explored the sand giving us scale perhaps but I much prefer the rippling virgin surface here. Enjoy full screen

Bending to the light

I spotted this on an evening walk from our County Antrim holiday home last year. I enjoyed the strong tree in this light as the sun was quickly setting. Enjoy full screen

Days of frosty mist.

10 Feb 2023 33 51 197
Over the last week or so, we have had cold frosty mornings with many parts of the country covered in ice and fog. Here is a shot from one of our Saddleworth villages in such conditions. Have a good weekend.

The Last Post

23 Jun 2022 22 26 225
A homage to our late Queen here. There are a lot of these E.R (Elizabeth Regina: Queen Elizabeth) post boxes around and even many with G.R (George Rex: King George) inscribed. I wonder how many C.R post-boxes will be produced and lovingly kept going like this one seen in Northern Ireland. In these days of email and multi-media messaging it would seem that the days pf post-boxes are numbered. We have had royal post boxes since the reign of Queen Victoria and there are a quite a few people who still search for and collect real sightings of the rarer ones. Here is a list of post-box monarchs: VR – Queen Victoria : 1837-1901 ER VII – King Edward VII : 1901-1910 GR – King George V : 1910-1936 ER VIII – King Edward VIII : Jan-Dec 1936 GR VI – King George VI : 1936-1952 EIIR – Queen Elizabeth II : 1952-2022 CIIIR – King Charles III : 2022-present. A winter blast of colour

20 Jan 2023 30 26 232
A trip to my local countryside retreat is always exciting and today’s weather is no exception. As the strong contra-jour sun lights up these trees and grasses to exaggerate their natural colours I cannot but help myself to shoot. Enjoy full screen

Wet seat

16 Feb 2015 24 33 267
A 2015 trip to Cyprus brought us in the vicinity of Larnaca. Here is its Salt Lake, not far from the airport. As can be seen the water is slightly higher than normal and so no sit down for a picnic today. A drifting colony of pink flamingos can just be seen in the distance. See PiP. Enjoy full screen Have a great day. My thanks to Keith Burton for pointing our that these were not pelicans as I first described them as, but flamingos.

Mount Teide of Tenerife

27 Nov 2011 20 19 220
A December 2011 cruise around the Canaries brought us to the Spanish paradise holiday destination of Tenerife. After driving up through the rain forest we reach the arid moon-like plateau. As you can see a place of mysterious colour and wonder caused by countless eruptions and larva flows. The whole island is dominated by its still active volcano, Mount Teide at 12,188ft . Its summit is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic . Its most recent eruption occurred in late 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the northwestern Santiago rift In front of us is the strange pillar Roque Cinchado at 27-metre high, composed mostly of volcanoclastic sedimentary rock layers. Its upper layers have been intruded by two sills of lava, which have made the upper part of the pillar more resistant to erosion. For the more adventurous the peak can be reached by a cablecar, a trip that one day, I still hope to do. Enjoy full screen

A visit to the KWVR (Keighley & Worth Valley Rail…

15 May 2010 21 16 193
My 2010 ‘Yanks’ photo posted a couple of days ago, reminded me that I had not posted any of the locomotives on here. I shall try to make up for that now. We are just outside the village of Oxenhope and stood on the grass banks waiting for this train to pass us. It is the Class 4, 2-6-4T, 80002 with its special name for this occasion of ‘The Winton Train Prague-Harworth’. It has been living at the KWVR since 1969 but in 2013, it was withdrawn from service now being on show at Oxenhope for static viewing. See PiPs for more views. The station view is Oxenhope. Enjoy full screen, enjoy the weekend. More info: kwvr.co.uk/80002-br-standard-class-4mt-2-6-4t

Lindisfarne Castle

04 Sep 2022 42 57 254
A look up to this imposing 16th-century castle from the shore. A good climb for those fit enough and it is possible to look around it too. It was much altered by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1901. The island is accessible from the mainland at low tide by means of a causeway. PiP Have a good weekend

Yanks

15 May 2010 17 15 148
A trip to the Yorkshire towns of Oxenhope, Harworth and Keighley in 2010 found us in the middle of a 40s weekend at Harworth. As these places with their heritage railway centres were locations for the famous Yanks film of 1978, it was no wonder then that this type of scene was very popular. Looks like these gentlemen had received a warm welcome from the ladies of the town here :) Enjoy full screen

Carradale harbour sleeps

01 May 2022 31 27 235
A look back at last year’s visit to Carradale on Scotland’s Mull of Kintyre. The fishing boats are resting against the harbour wall for the time being but will be out again long before daybreak. A little warmth of light in the sky brings one of our only glimpses of a sunset here but the still water makes for very pleasant reflections. Enjoy full screen and have a great day.

Another Winter seat

30 Jan 2023 27 31 175
As the frost takes hold of the grass and wood of this seat I am reminded why I enjoy taking pictures so much. Such moments, frozen, are always a treasure. Enjoy full screen Have a great day.

Memories of Suilven

13 May 2021 15 18 179
After being reminded of the beauties of wild Assynt in Scotland recently, I was tempted to look back through my 2021 collection to find an unposted beauty. Here is a look at the mighty twin peaked Suilven with its partner Canisp shrouded in the white cloud, further to the left. One of the wonderful things around here is the amount of yellow gorse we see. Our road goes on to the right. Enjoy full screen

Salford Quays at night

19 Jan 2023 33 51 240
A look at the Manchester ship canal as it makes its way up into the centre of Manchester at Salford Quays from Liverpool. Across the water we see the modern Media City buildings where our national BBC and ITV broadcasters have northern headquarters. Just by the brightly lit rounded corner sits the Lowry Theatre, our destination. There are a few very nice bridges around here and as can be seen, mostly lit up after dark. The PiP shows the scene around the corner some hours before. The whole capture is quite pleasing to me especially when considered it was hand-held on my phone. Have a good weekend.
