The Last Post

The Last Post
A homage to our late Queen here. There are a lot of these E.R (Elizabeth Regina: Queen Elizabeth) post boxes around and even many with G.R (George Rex: King George) inscribed. I wonder how many C.R post-boxes will be produced and lovingly kept going like this one seen in Northern Ireland. In these days of email and multi-media messaging it would seem that the days pf post-boxes are numbered.

We have had royal post boxes since the reign of Queen Victoria and there are a quite a few people who still search for and collect real sightings of the rarer ones. Here is a list of post-box monarchs:

VR – Queen Victoria : 1837-1901
ER VII – King Edward VII : 1901-1910
GR – King George V : 1910-1936
ER VIII – King Edward VIII : Jan-Dec 1936
GR VI – King George VI : 1936-1952
EIIR – Queen Elizabeth II : 1952-2022
CIIIR – King Charles III : 2022-present.

Thanks Dave. Its surprising how much we see and don't see around us. I had never taken notice of the II before either but I must have seen it.

You make my point about the rarity of using real letters nowadays. I think the prices for stamps are extortionate so that does not help.

Btw. I rarely use post boxes... just the occasional begging letter.

Yes, I realised of course about the complimentary colours here. I have seen and remembered that post box you posted here at Stainforth. So, are you a box collector?

Cheers. Herb

Ah, a man here who I now include as an avid collector of such post-boxes. (after seeing your vast collection). Glad you liked my find. In actual fact I must have a few other snaps of boxes tucked away too. My pleasure to include the very interesting link.

I see like most there is only one collection a day, given how long the old cast iron ones last there won't be much demand for Charles lll ones I'm sure a few will be made for prominent positions

Thanks Peter. Yes in the countryside this is often the case. We have more collections per day on our busy urban streets. I will be looking out for old boxes now perhaps. As you say, not likely to see many Charles boxes for a while.

Oh bugger! On my constitutional today I happened upon a pale green one of these and would have taken a shot but the light had just gone; five minutes earlier and I would have posted it by now! Maybe another time. But I don't ever recall seeing a pale green one before!
Like this shot a lot, Herb!

A good picture and information Herb. I suppose people are using them less and less, but they are so much a part of Great Britain, along with the red phone boxes. I posted a birthday card a couple of days ago, so long live the post boxes ;-))

Cheers, Rosa.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne
Agreed Rosa. I would be the first to bemoan the lack of them. I rarely send post now but Eileen seems to send millions of greetings cards. Long Live the post box.

Cheers, Herb

Haha, good on your wife ;-) Actually the card I posted was also to an Eileen, my Scottish sister-in-law.
