Aug 19, 2023. The road to enlightenment

For this special 'World Photograph Day' I will share this scene from my childhood to the present day. It is our local 'Hartshead Pike', a tower that I have seen from one of my house windows for much of my life.
This is a high, almost desolate spot where one can feel a special connection with the land and history. In these days of uncertainly and climate catastrophes it is nice to know that this seems to stand forever and can even be seen from flying aircraft coming in to land at Manchester Airport. The very long 30 second exposure emphasises the passage of time here.
The present tower, built in 1863 by John Eaton near the site of an earlier one which was used as a signalling station, commemorates the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Standing at 940ft (286m) ASL it is one of our highest landmarks in this area.

What a wonderful thing to be able to see from your window. A super shot and perfect for World Photography Day!

ps it is fast disappearing for me from our house as surrounding trees block the line of sight path.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Boarischa Krautmo clubAs others mention, I also think the composition is just right for this image. Quite brilliant to think of a long exposure so the clouds would be as they are here. Another thing I can't seem to pull off.
But I really want to know, what is this filter you used? You mention to Keith that you used a x10 filter and they mention a "Big Stopper" filter. What are those? And how are they helpful for a long exposure? I'm so curious!
Herb Riddle club has replied to raingirl clubThe BIG ONE or Big Stopper as it known is a 10x Neutral Density filter. Almost black! So it attenuates the brightness 10x (Or some people would say 10 stops of aperture). It simply goes at the end of your lens (in my case its a 'Lee' make square filter that slides into a special holder, that then screws into the lens filter thread. So you need to compensate for the lack of light by either making the aperture as wide as possible (which cannot be done with a 10x) or by slowing the shutter speed right down. A simple guide is that 1/30th sec real reading will need 30 full seconds, so a stout tripod is essential. Seen here, it has slowed the moving clouds into a soft blur!
Hope this clarifies all.
Regards. Herb
raingirl club has replied to Herb Riddle clubThanks for the detailed information about the filter. I never knew how people got those soft clouds without things getting too bright. I usually don't have the patience for a tri-pod, but I'm really glad other people do.
