A visit to Barmouth cannot be complete without crossing the estuary by ferry to Fairbourne and it’s narrow gauge railway. Here we are at its end terminus which gives us a chance for a photo call as well as coffee and cakes. The 12.25inch gauge railway has been running for 100 years and is run mostly by volunteers.
The close up-engine PiP shows ‘Sherpa’ a 0-4-OST built in 1978 and the symbols on the side of the engine gives a clue to its Darjeeling Himalaya Railways connection, on which it is designed.
The other picture shows just how many carriages these small engines can pull (or push). It is on its way back to Fairbourne itself with its cargo of happy holiday makers. The buildings show parts of Barmouth on the other side of the unseen River Mawddach.

Hi Gordon. No we did not go on the train. We actually drove up near this spot and parked. The long trains were actually pretty full. Neither did we actually go into the café but that looked pretty busy too.

Yes it is a great little railway. It looks to run a total round trip of 3.4miles!

A smashing series of photos Herb.............all very nicely composed and taken. It must have been fascinating to have a look around the terminus.......although I see from your reply to Gordon you didn't sample the coffee and cakes.......something I wouldn't have been able to resist :-)

The backdro0 in your main image is particularly attractive!

I always find it very impressive how powerful this small narrow gauge locomotives are!

Yes, it is always nice to walk around here and it seems to have a better mini climate as well. We may have gone into the café if not for the fact we had our flask of coffee with us -so a car picnic. It seems these engines are particularly powerful for the size as we saw at least one trip where every seat was taken by many adults as well as children. I think it may be a while until we get here again as this trip was to finish what we started last year and was curtailed due to us catching Covid.

Colin, its always good to see you here. Yes, Barmouth and the inland countryside all around is pretty impressive. A few narrow-gauge train sin this area.
