Ilam Hall from the River Manifold

Ilam Hall from the River Manifold
Situated in Ilam Park, near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. This is a very pleasant park and a starting point for the impressive Dove Dale walk. The Victorian Gothic Mansion is now owned by our National Trust and part of it is leased to the Youth Hostels Association.

The river here was re-sited and the bridge built anew when the mansion was built, in order to enhance the grounds.

Hi again Peter. Good that you spotted the flaw in all this. In actual fact when the mansion was built the river had flown elsewhere, so the Port family re-routed the river and built the bridge from scratch just so they could have a pleasant vista to it from their gardens. So it was with the age of Gentry in those Victorian days. In that respect no heavy vehicles or carriages would ever had crossed this disguised brick bridge. A nice view now though.

Cheers and have a good week yourself, Herb
ps on closer inspection, I am not sure if bricks are involved in this?

Thanks Toz. Yes we actually managed to park in Iiam village for free, walked around the gardens here, past the pleasant church and then on to the main attraction: Dove Dale of which I shall post a view or two later. A must for you if you have yet to try it all my friend.

Cheers, Herb
