Gufetto della chiesa di Notre-Dame

In rue de la Chouette, un percorso pedonale che costeggia il lato nord della chiesa e l'abside, una pietra di una cappella di Notre-Dame porta un segno unico. All'angolo di un contrafforte di una cappella è scolpito un uccello che i digionesi chiamano il gufo . Il suo significato è sconosciuto. Per alcuni, il gufo potrebbe essere una firma lasciata lì da uno scalpellino. Quel che è certo è che non è la firma dell'architetto della chiesa, perché questo uccello è scolpita in una cappella costruita nel tardo XV ° o all'inizio del XVI ° secolo, o più secoli dopo la costruzione di Notre-Dame.

Il gufo è molto consumato a causa di una pratica superstiziosa che suscita: digionesie turisti hanno l'abitudine di accarezzarlo con la mano sinistra, sperando che il desiderio che formulano venga esaudito. Oggi, quindi, rimane solo la forma generale, la maggior parte dei dettagli della scultura sono scomparsi da tempo.

Il 5 gennaio 2001, un vandalo ha colpito più volte il gufo con un martello. Questo degrado ha suscitato l'emozione della gente di Digione. Piuttosto che lasciare il gufo così com'era o sostituire il blocco di pietra su cui era stato scolpito, si decise di riparare le rotture. Un calco del gufo è stato realizzato nel 1988 da uno scultore del Louvre. È servito da modello per la riparazione, che consisteva nell'intarsiare un frammento di pietra, poi patinato. Questo lavoro venne svolto alla fine di gennaio e all'inizio di febbraio 2001.

In rue de la Chouette, a footpath running along the north side of the church and the apse, a stone from a Notre-Dame chapel bears a unique sign. On the corner of a chapel buttress is carved a bird that the Digionese call the owl. Its meaning is unknown. For some, the owl could be a signature left there by a stonemason. What is certain is that it is not the signature of the church architect, because this bird is carved in a chapel built in the late 15th or early 16th century, or several centuries after Notre-Dame was built.

The owl is much consumed because of a superstitious practice it arouses: tourists have the habit of stroking it with their left hand, hoping that the wish they make will be granted. Today, only the general shape remains, most of the details of the sculpture have long since disappeared.
On 5 January 2001, a vandal hit the owl several times with a hammer. This degradation aroused the emotion of the people of Dijon. Rather than leave the owl as it was or replace the stone block on which it was carved, it was decided to repair the breakage. A cast of the owl was made in 1988 by a sculptor from the Louvre. It served as a model for the repair, which consisted of inlaying a fragment of stone, which was then patinated. This work was carried out in late January and early February 2001.
