Cristo Velato

Il Cristo velato del Sanmartino è uno dei più grandi capolavori della scultura di tutti i tempi. Fin dal ’700 viaggiatori più o meno illustri sono venuti a contemplare questo miracolo dell’arte, restandone sconcertati e rapiti. Tra i moltissimi estimatori si ricorda Antonio Canova, che durante il suo soggiorno napoletano provò ad acquistarlo e si tramanda dichiarasse in seguito che avrebbe dato dieci anni di vita pur di essere lo scultore di questo marmo incomparabile. Purtroppo non si potevano prendere foto.

Sanmartino's Veiled Christ is one of the greatest masterpieces of sculpture of all time. Since the 18th century, more or less illustrious travellers have come to contemplate this miracle of art, remaining bewildered and enraptured. Among the many admirers was Antonio Canova, who tried to buy it during his stay in Naples and is said to have later declared that he would have given ten years of his life to be the sculptor of this incomparable marble. Unfortunately, no photos could be taken.
