San Domenico Maggiore

La basilica di San Domenico Maggiore è una chiesa monumentale di Napoli sita in posizione pressoché centrale rispetto al decumano inferiore, nella piazza omonima.

Voluta da Carlo II d'Angiò ed eretta tra il 1283 e il 1324, divenne la casa madre dei domenicani[1] nel regno di Napoli e chiesa della nobiltà aragonese.

La basilica, tipico esempio di architettura gotico-angioina, assieme al suo adiacente convento, costituisce uno dei più importanti complessi religiosi della città, sia sotto il profilo storico che artistico e culturale.

The basilica of San Domenico Maggiore is a monumental church in Naples located almost centrally on the lower decumanus, in the square of the same name.

Commissioned by Charles II of Anjou and built between 1283 and 1324, it became the mother house of the Dominicans[1] in the kingdom of Naples and the church of the Aragonese nobility.

The basilica, a typical example of Angevin-Gothic architecture, together with its adjacent convent, constitutes one of the most important religious complexes in the city, both historically and artistically and culturally
