Lovely series of bridges Amelia. This and Bridge 81 are my favourites - we don't have this type in the Black Country.

I'm not sure if there was any Dutch influence here, Gudrun, Many British canals in the Industrial
Revolution were originally built with lifting bridges like this. As road traffic increased in the 18th and 19th centuries more arch bridges were built.

This canal was used to transport coal and limestone from one area to another using horse drawn barges.

Thank you, Doug. We quite often take a walk along this canal on a Sunday afternoon, mainly because there is a cafe that serves reasonable coffee at bridge 80. ;-)

So the English and Dutch simply came to similar solutions - because it worked best:-)

Shropshire is largely a farming county as you know, Graham, so these small lift bridges are useful for transport of equipment etc. But we walk along here fairly frequently and I have never seen it lowered.
