Flyin' Solo

25 Oct 2016 15 8 499
Sight and Sound Here is a young, great blue heron out on a solo jaunt who just happened to stop by for a visit. Notice his beautifully colored plumage. A favorite song since I was 16 years old. How music can stay with us... :) Poco from their "Head Over Heals" Album (1975.) Lyrics by Timothy B. Schmit, (bass player for the Eagles) music by Timothy B. and John Brennan Flyin' Solo (sorry only two links available. Hopefully you can access one of them.) Flyin' Solo

Masquerade

21 Oct 2016 16 16 523
Sight and Sound This is a Cedar Waxwing I heard this song yesterday and thought it would go well with this little masked marauder who was stealing insects from the other birds. Another brilliant song written by Leon Russell. George Benson from his 1976 album "Breezin'" Masquerade Masquerade Masquerade

You Are Here....

Sight and Sound ♪ From mystical to magical what a way to fly.... ♫ This is a photo that I took earlier this summer of a pair of Cedar Waxwings resting on some blackberry bushes. These birds are quite magical and not easy find here. Out of my Head....

21 Sep 2016 6 4 514
Sight and Sound A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers One is clearly "out of his head" over the other ;) (I am such a (sap) sucker for love songs. ;) Done originally by Little Anthony and The Imperials, there have been over 50 covers of this popular song. Here are three versions I remember most. Add your own favorite if it isn't here. I'd love to hear it! :) Little Anthony & The Imperials (1964) Going Out of My Head Dionne Warwick (1970) Going Out of My Head Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 (1966) Going Out of My Head

Somebody

Sight and Sound A chase and a loud conversation between a young eagle and a crow. Not sure who's following whom here I just know there was a lot of squawking going on. The Eagles from their "Long Road Out of Eden" album (2007) Somebody Somebody Somebody

Pet Shop Birds

Sight and Sound I've got a little leftover stock from my trip to the pet shop last weekend so I thought I'd link it with this classic by the "Pet Shop Boys." Anybody remember this one? Pet Shop Boys first released this as a single in 1984 and then later on their 1986 album "Please." West End Girls West End Girls

I've Seen Brighter Days...

02 Sep 2016 7 6 432
Sight and Sound The birds seem to just be flocking to me this week lol It was a dreary day here on the 1st of September, and a reminder that summer is on its way out. A nice surprise down at the pond recently though. This Great Blue Heron spent a long time preening atop the log we call "The Croc" that goes up and down depending on the pond level and looks like a crocodile in its reflection. (Try it on black) My husband told me I'd never be able to get a pic so of course that set the challenge for me lol. I shot this from inside our house about 500 feet or 152 meters away with my trusty FZ1000 on my tripod. It's not the best pic, but these birds, when wild and unaccustomed to people, are so sensitive to movement that they will fly off very easily. (I also uploaded a video.) Flicker

30 Aug 2016 15 13 427
Sight and Sound and NOT TSC Mother Nature, I love your humor/humour. After spending the last week trying to find even one bird to photograph for "The Sunday Challenge" (and finally having to go to the local pet shop for my photo) opportunity flew in and landed in a tree right in front of me today. This pretty "Northern Flicker" stayed long enough for me to get this shot just in the "nick of time." (A little sarcasm here. ;) Bonnie Raitt from her "Nick of Time" album (1989) (Might be a first entry to SaS of this fantastic artist, not sure... Mick, Roger?) Flycatcher

19 Aug 2016 10 6 440
Sight and Sound I was down at the pond one evening watching the birds dart above the water catching their dinner. I took this photo of a Pacific Slope Flycatcher while he was resting on a branch. (Looks nice big.) This piece of music reminds me of all the little birds fluttering about that evening in the warm light. Ravel A really nice performance if you can see it: Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings (musician's credits at the end) Album: Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings

Happy Independence Day!

04 Jul 2016 6 12 408
Sight and Sound The eagle is our national symbol here in the U.S.A. so I choose this photo to celebrate our "Independence Day" July 4th, but I realize that eagles mean something special to most everyone as they are a fantastic and majestic bird. I was so excited to be able to see these eagles right down the road from where I live. What an joy to watch them dive into the water below and then go up and land in this big fir tree. Wild Geese

29 Jun 2016 5 8 382
Sight and Sound I took this one a little while ago. It was my first time actually capturing birds in flight that were somewhat recognizable. Not completely in focus, I salvaged it by changing it to b/w, using "infrared" and s/c so you could actually see the geese. I'm pairing it with this instrumental by this group from the Netherlands. Love Nest

08 May 2016 11 21 453
Sight and Sound Happy Mother's Day! Here's a little addendum (and some quick snaps) to my photo from yesterday of the little bird nest since so many of you were concerned for its safety. As you can see it is pretty well hidden between the barn and the water faucet and not just out in the open like it looked in my photo. Today I went out to make sure Momma "Tap Tap" was doing all right after I disturbed her yesterday and, lo and behold, 3 of her babies have hatched! What a great Mother's Day surprise. :) I will pair this with a song that was released, this very weekend, way back in 1973 by George Harrison. Thanks, Mick, for that info and for the suggestion. :) From the album "Living in the Material World" Give Me Love Give Me Love (p.s. Our cats don't go outside their little fenced in area and can't get to the nest so no worries you guys! :)
