A section of Dunstaffnage Castle ruins, The castle is built on an outcrop rock using what appears to be an odd mix of stone, (Large View) I think the colours of the stone in the wall to left are beautiful!. The castle which was built before 1240 has a very defensive position having water on three sides, it covers from Firth of Lorn to the Pass of Brander also Ardmucknish Bay and the entrance to Loch Etive. HWW to all!

Bornsketaig Chuch, Trotternish, Isle of Skye, The church dates from 1810 and shown as still complete in 1903, but was in ruins in the early 1960s, it was apparently abandoned around 1924, The Church is featured in this RUNRIG video www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3Zw6wtbZ3E

Pre Reformation! HWW!

St Mary's old church & cemetery, Kilmuir, Dunvegan, Isle of Skye. The church was built in 1694 -- the date is inscribed on a stone over the north door -- to replace an older medieval church that served as the parish church for the Duirinish region of northern Skye. The most striking memorial inside the burial ground is a large ashlar obelisk commemorating Lord Thomas Fraser, 10th Lord Lovat, who died in 1699 For clarity, a large view would be appreciated, HWW! Holy Walls

29 Oct 2024 41 64 171
The Priory ruins on The Holy Island of Lindisfarne in this image from 2018, In 635AD Saint Aidan came from Iona and chose to found his monastery on the island This Island is off of the Northeast Coast of Northumberland, accessed by a One Mile tidal causeway, which is covered by the North Sea twice daily, therefore a study of tide times is required for a safe crossing. HWW and a large view is probably best! More information en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindisfarne

Abbey Ruins.

These very attractive stone colours are at Kilwinning Abbey and monastery in North Ayrshire, Scotland. It is I understand a type of limestone from a local quarry, (Goldcraigs freestone quarry) Founded in the late 1100s it was the home of Tironensian Benedictine monks, who lived here for around 400 years, the majority of monks would have come from the Mother House of Kelso Abbey. Large view for detail and HWW!

Carnasserie Castle

29 Aug 2024 36 57 213
The ruined Carnasserie Castle looks down across the landscape from it's high vantage point, also with commanding views over the southern approach to Loch Awe. This 16th-century tower house held an envious position! HFF and a good weekend,,,,,,,,, A large view if you are able!

Only Walls Remain

04 Apr 2023 45 61 255
Another image from the amazing ruins at Kilwinning Abbey showing its magnificent south transept which still stands nearly to its full height today. Kilwinning old Parish Church is in the background. In my opinion, it is better viewed large, HWW to all

Abbey Ruins

21 Mar 2023 46 72 234
Kilwinning Abbey, Established circa 1162 - 1168, Disestablished 1592 And the Kilwinning parish church through the arch Kilwinning Abbey was founded in the late 1100s. It has close ties to Kelso Abbey, one of Scotland’s great borders abbeys, which provided it with colonising monks. The monks of Kilwinning had a peaceful existence in their 400-year stay here. The abbey was ‘cast down’ following the Protestant Reformation of 1560, though its magnificent south transept still stands nearly to its full height today. Large for detail Please, HWW and a good Wednesday to all

Coast and Castle

19 Mar 2023 45 79 245
Built by the Clan Kennedy of Carrick during the 15th and 16th century, Dunure Castle stands on a rocky promontory on the Carrick Coast around 5 miles down the coast from the town of Ayr, which is just visible on the distant coast if a large view is used. HBM and a great week

The Church in the Fields-, (pip)

13 Sep 2022 49 56 248
The harvest is in but the festival will have to be elsewhere, this is Buittle Parish church lit by late evening sun. The long history of this ‘Church in the Fields’, going back via the adjacent ruined building to the royal chapel of C13th King John Balliol, lends atmosphere to this lovely rural church. Which was originally Roman Catholic and later became Church of Scotland. The church closed in 2010 and is now up for sale, (Pip) The roofless shell of the most intact medieval parish church in the region I prefer the image large.

Gory History

08 Dec 2021 46 84 283
Trumpan Church, Isle of Skye, which is probably from 1330s and it lasted until 1578 when the doors were barred and the thatched roof set on fire with a congregation of MacLeods at worship inside, this atrocity by the Macdonald clan was retribution for an attack on clan members on the isle of Eigg The history and reason for this and the associated clans in these bloody massacres can be read here sobt.co.uk/trumpan-church Better large in my opinion.

On the Carrick Coast
