This is Casa Grande from the Window Trail in the Chisos Basin of Big Bend National Park. We had hiked the trail and were returning when the photo was taken. The tall plant is the dried flower stalk of an agave.

I've only a few more photos to post from Big Bend National Park and from the Window Trail, the last trail we hiked in the park. The plant on the right is a Havard Agave. Having bloomed the main plant dies back and you can just see the new plant emerging next to it and behind it.

One of our favorite plants in Big Bend National Park was this beautiful agave. We photographed them many times, here on the rocks along the Window Trail.

This beautiful Agave was photographed along the Window Trail in Big Bend National Park. The Window Trail is in the Chisos Basin and the trail leads to the pour-off for the basin.

These are three photos of the Window Trail in Big Bend National Park. The trail was the last trail we hiked there on the last day of our visit to the park. This photo shows where the trail follows a narrow canyon through the surrounding Chisos Mountains to a to cliff where the water from the Chisos Basin pours off. The trail at this point is up on the rocks at the left of the photo but drops back and forth across the water that's left in the canyon.

This was the beginning of the Window Trail in Big Bend National Park. Further on the trail entered a canyon in the Chisos Mountains and led to the window through which the water from the Chisos Basin flows out of the basin over a cliff.

The Window Trail in Big Bend National Park leads to a pour off where the water from the basin flows over a cliff. At this point the trail led through oaks and scrub to a narrow canyon.

These are not the best photos but this is a Black Bear we saw along the Window Trail in Big Bend's Chisos Basin while hiking there. The bear was digging for something when we first saw him but soon turned his attention to us and we quickly moved on. We saw him again a little further down the dry creek bed as we hiked a long it.

This Black Bear was along the Window Trail in the Chisos Basin of Big Bend National Park. We managed to get a couple of quick photos but moved on for fear of disturbing him, though Black Bears are not especially dangerous.

This is the narrow gap through which all the water that falls in the Chisos Basin exits. The Chisos Basin lies in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park and is one of the most popular parts of the park. We hiked the narrow canyon that leads to the Window when in Big Bend earlier in the year, something that can be done only when it is dry. We did not get close enough to get photos from the edge of the gap since the area is somewhat dangerous, but beyond the gap is a sheer cliff down which the water falls.

The Window Trail leads to the pour-off for the Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park. In the dry season the narrow canyon can be hiked and is not as difficult as that may look in this photo.

Our last day in Big Bend was spent hiking the Window Trail in the Chisos Basin. The "Window" is a pour-off, a narrow notch, through which all the water that falls in the basin runs off. At this point the trail can be dangerous if it is raining, but most of the time the trail is dry.
This will be my last post until sometime next week. I am leaving tomorrow for Colorado where I will be hiking and backpacking with two of my brothers for five days. We will be doing the Four Passes Loop in the Maroon Bells and the Snowmass Wilderness, part of the Rockies.
Our planned hike will take us about 35 miles (55 km) and through four mountains passes over 12000 feet (3600 m) over five days. I am really looking forward to the hike and the time with my brothers but am a little nervous about the altitude and the backpacking at that altitude.

The "Window" is a narrow notch through which much of the water that collects in the Chisos Basin of Big Bend National Park runs out of the basin. The hike to the Window is through a narrow canyon such as this.

On the last day of our stay in Big Bend National Park and after traveling to our campsite for the night, intending to hike in that area, we returned to the Chisos Basin and hiked the Window Trail. The weather at our campsite was overcast and threatening rain but we found sunshine in the basin. The Window is a narrow opening in the Chisos Mountains through which the water from the basin pours off. The trail is only three to four miles out and back and the photo was taken looking back down the trail to Casa Grade the peak in the center of the photo.
