Coming into Yellowstone National Park from the west, one follows the entrance road for fourteen miles from the town of West Yellowstone, just outside the park, to Madison Junction where the entrance road joins the lower loop of the main road. Madison Junction is also the place where the Madison River begins at the confluence of the Gibbon and Firehole Rivers and then flows out of the park to the west along the same route as thee entrance road. There is a campground at Madison Junction and these sunset photos were taken near the campground and the river. We were camped there early in the year when the roads were just being opened.

Continuing our tour of Yellowstone National Park, we now come into the park via the west entrance. That road is fourteen miles and follows the Madison River, the river in this photo. The photo, taken in September, shows, too, the warmth of the river, which is fed by hot springs and is quite warm year around. There are often bison and elk along the river, some of which are shown in the inset photos.

These are some of the bison herd that had traffic stopped along the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park when we were there. No one was about to challenge them as they used the road for their own purposes. The bison shown include a bull, a cow and a calf.

Hooded Ladies'-tresses, Spiranthes romanzoffiana, like wet meadows and that is where we found these, in as wet meadow along the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park. In fact we found them in several of the geyser basins as well and along the Gibbon River. The common name, Ladies'-tresses, refers to the braided appearance of the flower spikes, not very evident in this picture.
