The Trisetellas are almost all very tiny plants with narrow leaves and small, three-tailed flowers (Trisetella means three-tailed). They are, however, very seldom identified correctly and I am not sure of the identification of this plant. It was purchased as a different species, subsequently identified as the species named, but others have suggested that it is in fact a third species. By any name, however, it is an attractive miniature which comes from Ecuador.

Trisetella regia, the Regal Trisetella, is a miniature orchid but a giant in its genus. Most Trisetellas are only a few centimeters tall with 1 centimeter flowers on short spikes, but this species is 7-8 centimeters with 20 centimeter flower spikes and 4 centimeter flowers. The genus name, Trisetella, refers to the three "tails" which are characteristic of the genus. This species is from Peru and there are more pictures of the plant and flowers at the link below.

This miniature orchid species is from Colombia. Its genus name, Trisetella, refers to the three thread-like "tails" of the flower, and the species name, gemmata, refers to the sparkling texture of the flowers. More pictures of the flower and plant have been blogged here: orchidsinbloom-ron.blogspot.com/2011/01/trisetella-gemmat... .

This tiny orchid species is from Ecuador and grows at high elevations. It was once classified as a Masdevallia and belongs to the group of Central and South American orchids known as Pleurothallids.
The plant, shown here, is only 2 cm tall, less than an inch, and the flowers are huge in comparison, nearly two inches in size. Thew flowers have a sparkling crystalline texture.

Closely related to Masdevallias and once classified with them, the Trisetellas are all tiny plants with unusual and colorful flowers. I purchased this plant as Trisetella nodulifera, but it very obviously was not that species when it bloomed and I am reasonably sure that this is the correct identification. This species is from Ecuador and is approximately 3 cm tall with 1 cm flowers.

This is another miniature orchid species from Ecuador and is closely related to the previous species, in fact, was once classified as a Masdevallia. I am not sure, however, that it is identified correctly. It seems that the vendors put any name at all on the different species and most of them turn out to be something else. The flowers are 2 cm tall on a 5 cm plant, and when it blooms the flowers look like little jewels. The species' name means "swollen" and refers to the flower's tails.

Trisetella is a small genus of tiny orchids that used to be classified as Masdevallias, and the resemblance is obvious. This plant is only 3 cm tall and the flowers are 1 cm in size. The plant will do well either in a small pot or mounted, but needs cool temperatures since it is from the high cloud forests. Trisetella dressleri is from Panama and is named after an American botanist, Robert Dressler.

Once classified with Masdevallia, Trisetella hoeijeri belongs to a genus of tiny plants, most of which have tiny, reddish-brown flowers with short yellow tails. This plant is less than an inch tall but the flowers are one and a half inches from tip to tip. It is from Ecuador and the flowers always remind me of white birds in flight.

The genus Trisetella is related to Masdevallia and in fact was once part of that genus. To it belong a group of tiny plants with colorful tailed flowers. This species is from Ecuador, the plant is a little more than an inch tall and the flowers are a third of an inch.
