Lord Howe fence

Looking toward the southern end of Lord Howe Island. Mt Lidgbird on the left and Mt Gower beyond to the right. Best viewed large. It's near midnight here, so I'll wish everyone a Happy Fence Friday.

Fun with fungi

The rain is still coming down (325mm for the 14 days to this morning, probably over 50mm since) and moist conditions are just what fungi like. These have popped up in my yard on this piece of timber. I think they're a "Burnt-orange Bolete" , but Wiki tells me Australia has some 13,000 identified fungi types and up to as many as 250,000 types altogether!

In the park

The bench in nearby parkland and one of the "local mob". Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday and let's hope sanity prevails in these troubling times.

Young Australian Magpie

The local magpie family are quite comfortable with people nearby. This is one of the juveniles, the indications of that being the grey feathers on the back of the neck and wings (later becoming white) and the grey beak (becoming light with a dark tip).

Bad day for the beach

The weather wasn't good, but it certainly was better than the outlook of a few days previously. Even so, the earlier heavy rain meant that the ocean was muddy with run-off from the rivers and there still was some light rain. Nobody else was foolish enough to be at the beach! HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

It's arrived

For most of the past week, the central coast of eastern Australia, IE southeast Queensland and northern NSW, have been experiencing a massive and very unusual rainfall event. An upper low pressure system over the area has been fed with a stream of very moist tropical maritime air by a high pressure system near New Zealand. Although this sub-tropical area normally has a summer rainfall peak, the amounts from this system are far outside the usual bounds. Falls of 200mm daily with over a metre in the week have been common, with even over 700mm in 24 hours in some spots. ( ADDITION: I've just read that the top 1 week rainfall was about 1.8 M.) Needless to say, this has caused massive flooding and disruption in many areas. The weather system is now moving southwards, bringing the high rainfalls to Sydney and to my location further south. It should dissipate in the next few days, but not before causing further problems. This event is well outside what would be considered "normal", but it's entirely in keeping with the latest IPCC report issued on 28 February 2022. The media release with it warns “This report recognizes the interdependence of climate, biodiversity and people and integrates natural, social and economic sciences more strongly than earlier IPCC assessments, ....It emphasizes the urgency of immediate and more ambitious action to address climate risks. Half measures are no longer an option.”

Juvenile Wattlebird

Little Wattlebirds (Anthochaera chrsyoptera) have been nesting in my garden. It seemed this juvenile had just recently left the nest and it was loudly announcing its presence. A second image in the PiP, when it had moved to sit on the fence.
