Desolation

Desolation
Through the (rather dirty) window of our city hotel in Christchurch. All these buildings have been derelict since the earthquake and are surrounded by exclusion fencing, cleared sites, and more shipping containers. Image by my lovely wife.

Sadly, Bev, NZ is also known as "The Shaky Isles". These were the worst quakes in 80 years, but the active geology guarantees more.

What a series. We knew of the Christchurch earthquake but it's quite a reminder of the devastation and your pictures I've not seen before.

Thanks, Ron. I think the problem is that the media attention moves along but rarely looks back. We knew of the buildings destroyed at the time, but did not realise so many were damaged beyond further use and required demolition.

Thanks, Neil. That was pretty much our perspective also. We were stunned to find our (fairly new) hotel in the centre of such devastation. I thought it useful to document the situation.
