New Zealand - South Island
Visiting New Zealand had been on our travel "Bucket List" for years. Finally we made it to the South Island, in 2015. In no time, we found ourselves beginning to plan our next trip.

Rebuilding
Christchurch is rebuilding after two severe earthquakes within months (Sept 2010 and Feb 2011) killed many and left the city in ruins. Almost the entire city area has been cleared, as few buildings remained safely usable: these empty buildings await demolition. Massively solid-framed buildings are being erected. Second image in note.

At the edge of what was the Christchurch city centre pre-earthquakes: now largely empty of usable buildings, but with massively solid new constructions going up.

Christchurch cathedral
Through a viewing hole in the surrounding safety fence. Sadly, it seems likely the earthquake damage may be beyond reasonable repair. I have added the location details, it is interesting to view this area from the 'satellite' view.
The cathedral fence
The ruined cathedral. Colourful details, such as this safety fence (that colour is S.O.O.C.) have been arranged around the city centre to brighten the landscape . The contrast struck me forcibly. HFF and maybe try this music link which I think fits.
Innovation
Need a quick, inexpensive and near-indestructible building to replace your earthquake-damaged shops? Christchurch came up with the innovative idea of adapting shipping containers. It has been a notable success - there's even a bank. Other images in notes.
Preservation
Though in a sorry state, this building survived the Christchurch earthquakes. Shipping containers are stacked this way in front of a number of buildings, presumably to preserve the facades while also minimising risk in the streets should another quake occur. It seems (see note, copied from a shop window) there is an interesting term for this kind of damage.

Desolation
Through the (rather dirty) window of our city hotel in Christchurch. All these buildings have been derelict since the earthquake and are surrounded by exclusion fencing, cleared sites, and more shipping containers. Image by my lovely wife.

Construction
Sunset in Christchurch and the last images of this series. In the first note, the massive structure of the new "Grand Chancellor" hotel being erected: the previous 27 storey building had to be demolished after tipping sideways one metre! In the second note, building work is seen in all directions: the new bus interchange (see previous pano image) is the low building with the reddish wall. HFF!
