Waiting!

I was pruning our Wonga wonga vine when, suddenly, my thumb exploded in flames! At least it felt that way. I had been stung by an Australian Paper Wasp (Polistes humilis). I retreated, whimpering, indoors and some ten minutes later there was neither any pain nor bite mark, so I returned with the macro lens, keeping a safe distance and a wary eye. :) These are about 15mm long. They are called Paper Wasps because they build papery nests, as seen here, from a paste of saliva and chewed wood pulp.

LOL, and then I read that Bev had fun with the name too! It's like catnip! :D
Oh, and by the way, great picture of the paper wasps, I'm really sorry to hear that you got stung, they really do hurt intensely for a few moments. If you can believe it, the sting of a hornet (at least in my experience) makes a wasp feel like a gentle pinch. I stepped in some grass one day with my sandals on and ....WHAM! I felt like someone took a burning needle and jammed it an inch into my ankle! I could NOT believe how much it hurt!! I got a huge welt, but after about 20 min it subsided. I was worried that I was having a bad allergic reaction but thankfully I was ok. I have done reading on these guys and apparently wasps and hornets can release variable amounts of venom, and also species vary in their toxicity. In the end, let's just not get stung! :D OUCH!! :P
Oh...one last time...
WONGA WONGA!!! :D
